An elderly Salisbury woman was struck and killed Wednesday as she crossed the road in front of her house after checking her mailbox.

Mary Phillips Allmon, 79, of 320 Roseman Road, was pronounced dead at Rowan Regional Medical Center shortly after the 2:53 p.m. accident.

Trooper W.D. Greene of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Allmon had checked her mailbox, which is on the far side of the road from her house.

As she attempted to return to her house, she stepped in front of a 1993 Ford pickup driven by Shane Michael Frasier, 28, of 5225 Fish Pond Road, Salisbury.

"She just walked into his path," Greene said.

He said charges are likely. Greene said the speed limit at the scene is 35 mph.

"He was over the speed limit," Greene said of Frasier.

He said he would present the evidence to Rowan County District Attorney Bill Kenerly, who will decide whether to file charges.

Neighbors said Allmon had lived in her house for at least 30 years. They said she lived alone.

Members of Locke Fire Department responded.
