Matthew Lawrence Gruber graduated from Asheville-Buncombe Tech Aug. 3 with an associate degree in culinary technology.
Gruber was captain team member of the school's culinary team that won the national championship during competition in Florida in July. He is also a member of the American Culinary Federation.
He is employed at the Grove Park Inn and Resort in Asheville.

A 1969 graduate of West Rowan High School, Karriker received a bachelor of arts in elementary education in 1991 and a master of arts in school administration in 1997, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
She is principal at Granite Quarry Elementary School.
She is the daughter of Ellen H. Smith of Salisbury and the late W.D. Smith. She and husband Thomas have three children, Melissa Powers, Dr. Locke Karriker and Dr. Margo Karriker.
