Red Cross offering fire safety training
The American Red Cross is offering fire safety training from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter. This training teaches children in kindergarten through fifth grade about fire prevention.
The Salisbury Fire Department will be present along with a firetruck and the smoke house.

Staples' teacher appreciation day
Staples stores will host a teacher appreciation day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The first 200 teachers through the door will receive a Staples polybinder that will include a legal pad, paper clips, highlighter, index flags and discount coupons, along with other back-to-school accessories.
Teachers can also preview new products and learn more about the Staples Copy and Print Center. Teachers can also sign up to be part of the company's Recycle for Education program. Staples will donate $3 to the teacher's school for every eligible ink or laser toner cartridge collected.
Rowan airport annual fly-in is Sept. 8
The Rowan County Airport will host its annual fly-in with planes, fun, food and games.
The airport, at 3670 Airport Loop Road off U.S. 29 South, will host the event on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Planes on display will include light sport aircraft, N.C. National Guard helicopters and a Russian MIG L-39 jet.
Helicopter rides will be available for $25.
Army Reserve Unit to hold reunion
The Salisbury 346th Engineer Light Equipment Company, which was activated for duty during the Korean War, will hold its 57th reunion Saturday at the Granite Quarry American Legion Post 448.
The Army reserve unit, with 84 members, was called to active duty on Aug. 14, 1950, and trained at Fort Lewis, Wash.
The unit was not sent to the Korean War but saw duty in Germany. Some members assisted with the atomic program in Nevada.
'Pick of the Litter' yard sale
SPENCER Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary is holding a Pick of the Litter Yard Sale fundraiser Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Spencer Plaza parking lot.
The group promises "treasures galore," including books, small appliances, toys, CDs, DVDs, tools, china, games, furniture, knickknacks, lamps, pictures, kitchen items, luggage, exercise stuff and jewelry.
Back-to-school extravaganza
MOCKSVILLE Central Davie School will host a Back-To-School Extravaganza for parents and K-12 students on Monday night.
The NAACP is sponsoring the event, which lasts from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Studevent Gym of the school on Campbell Road.
Educators will be there to answer questions about the new school year, and adults and students can enjoy music, food, fun and door prizes.

Child safety seat check is Friday
GRANITE QUARRY Rowan Safe Kids will hold a child safety seat check at the Granite Quarry Fire Department Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The fire department is located at 143 N. Salisbury Ave.
The event coincides with the 10-year anniversary of nationwide Safe Kids Buckle Up programs and is one of nearly 100 events planned across the country.
Safe Kids Buckle Up teaches children and their caregivers about proper use of booster seats and safety belts, the dangers of trunk entrapment and heatstroke in parked cars and the hazardous blind spots around vehicles.
General Motors is the sole corporate sponsor of Safe Kids Buckle Up, the longest-running corporate-nonprofit partnership in child passenger safety.
Founded in 2001, Rowan Safe Kids works to prevent accidental childhood injury, the leading killer of children 14 and younger. Its members include the Granite Quarry and Salisbury fire departments, Salisbury Police Department, Smart Start Rowan, Salisbury Kawanis and the Rowan County Health Department, Emergency Medical Service and Sherriff's office.
Carole Dellinger of the Granite Quarry Fire Department now leads the group.
Rowan Parks and Recreation to meet Monday at 5
Rowan County Parks and Recreation Commission will meet Monday at Dan Nicholas Park, 6800 Bringle Ferry Road.
The meeting will be at 5 p.m. in the Nature Center.
The meeting has been moved up one week from the regular date due to Director Don Bringle attending a state meeting.
The commission's Property Committee will meet Friday at 8 a.m. at the park.
