Spencer Fire Department hands out annual awards, recognitions

SPENCER — Members of the Spencer Fire Department held their annual Christmas and awards dinner last week.

A Service Award was presented to Chief Jay Baker in recognition of 20 years of service.

Medical responder John Martin and firefighter David Lomax were recognized for their recent retirements and firefighter Jacky Moore was recognized for his upcoming retirement from the department.

Firefighter David Moore was named Rookie Firefighter of the Year. Moore is a recent graduate of the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Rookie School.

Capt. Stacy Baker received the Veteran Firefighter of the Year Award and Assistant Fire Chief Terry Smith was presented the Fire Chief's Award.

The Spencer Fire Department has a roster of 30 volunteer and part-time personnel and answered a total of 463 calls in 2006.

In August, the Spencer town board approved the purchase of a 2007 Seagrave Pumper, and should take delivery in June 2008.

In addition to Mayor Alica Bean and several members of the Board of Aldermen, retired firefighters Bill Baker, John Martin, and Don Wooten attended the dinner.
