Cleveland Town Board reschedules meeting for lack of quorum

By Kathy Chaffin

Salisbury Post

CLEVELAND — Monday's town board meeting here was rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 20, when there weren't enough members present to constitute a quorum.

Only two commissioners — John I. Steele Jr. and John Bradford — on the five-member board showed up Monday night, along with Mayor Jim Brown. Mayor Pro Tem Danny Gabriel was working, Commissioner Pat Phifer was sick and Commissioner Mary Frank "Frankie" Fleming-Adkins was out of town, according to Brown.

He apologized to the townspeople who were at the meeting, including Gary Mattox, who was scheduled to address the board about water line installment problems, and Ray Davies, chairman of the Cleveland Planning Board, who had some recommendations to make to the board.

Though the meeting never convened, Steele took the opportunity to commend Officer Brad Weaver of the Cleveland Police Department for meeting the training requirements for an intermediate certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Weaver, 28, has been a police officer in the town since Jan. 2, 2002.

"I'm very proud of this young man," Steele said. "He's great to work with."
