| Two Spencer Police officers earn Advanced Law Enforcement Certificates Staff report Two Spencer Police Department officers have recently received the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. The certificate, the highest honor awarded by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, recognizes education, training and experience by the recipient. Sgt. Eric R. Stillwell of China Grove received the certificate on May 19. Stillwell has been with the Spencer Police Department for 12 years. He is a graduate of A.L. Brown High School and is currently an investigator and firearms instructor with the department. On Aug. 25, Master Police Officer Gregory M. Hannold of Salisbury was awarded the certificate. Hannold has been with the Spencer Police Department for 11 years. He is a graduate of North Rowan High School and has a bachelor of business administration degree from Catawba College. He is also a firearms instructor with the department. Typically, 700 to 800 advanced certificates are awarded yearly by the Criminal Justice Standards Commission. To qualify for the advanced certificate, officers must complete a combination of professional training and education, as well as meet minimum service requirements. The Commission certifies all of the state's law enforcement officers, correctional, probation and parole and youth services officers, with the exception of sheriff's deputies. The Commission also establishes minimum employment and training standards, training content and instructor standards. The Commission maintains certification files on more than 33,000 criminal justice officers. |
