A China Grove teenager was accidentally shot Friday by the young child he was watching, authorities said.
Terry Wayne Bunton, 18, told deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office that he was looking after an 11-year-old relative at a home on Lois Lane in Salisbury and was showing the boy how to clean a gun before a planned weekend hunting trip.
When Bunton turned his back to put the guns away, he was shot once in the shoulder.
The boy told deputies Friday at the hospital that he dropped the .22-caliber rifle he was holding, but he wasn't sure if the gun fired when it hit the floor or when he tried to grab it as it fell, Lt. Terry Agner said.
Agner advises parents to be careful about letting younger children handle guns.
"Never handle them without adult supervision," he said.
Agner said guns should always be checked thoroughly.
"Treat every gun as if it's loaded," he said.
And if parents do want their children educated about guns, Agner suggests a National Rifle Association basic firearm training course.
Bunton has since been released from the hospital.
