National briefs: Bonds reasons that perjury charges should be dropped

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds asked a federal judge to dismiss perjury charges against him Wednesday, arguing the indictment is "scattershot" and noted for its "striking inartfulness."

Bonds was charged in November with lying to a grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

In the motion filed in San Francisco federal court, the former San Francisco Giant neither admits nor denies taking the drugs but argues the questions asked by prosecutors during a December 2003 grand jury appearance were vague, ambiguous and confusing.

The lawyers said "the questions posed to him by two different prosecutors were frequently imprecise, redundant, overlapping and frequently compound."

* TOKYO — The Boston Red Sox are putting advertisements on their uniforms for the first time.

The World Series champions said Wednesday they will wear sleeve patches with the logo "EMC" when they open the season with a two-game series against the Oakland Athletics at the Tokyo Dome on March 22 and 23.

EMC Corp. is a data-storage company based in Hopkinton, Mass.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Even before the first snap at fall football practice, Rich Rodriguez and his agent were pursuing a promised "culture change" at West Virginia and a shake-up at the highest levels of the athletic department, e-mails obtained by The Associated Press show.

But by mid-November, Rodriguez's agent Mike Brown was threatening to take his client elsewhere, warning WVU the coach was being mentioned for possible openings at Texas A&M and Florida State.

NFL

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Cam Cameron was hired as the Baltimore Ravens' offensive coordinator Wednesday, the latest offensive expert to take a shot at jump-starting a sluggish attack.

The 46-year-old Cameron was fired as Miami Dolphins coach after going 1-15, with his lone victory coming at the expense of the Ravens.

NHL

TORONTO — Mats Sundin scored with 29.2 seconds left to give Toronto a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night, one day after Cliff Fletcher took over as the Maple Leafs' interim general manager.

* ANAHEIM, Calif. — Dominik Hasek made 24 saves, and Brian Rafalski and Valtteri Filppula scored to lead the league-best Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.

* VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Daniel Sedin scored in the shootout to complete Vancouver's first third-period comeback of the season and end a seven-game winless skid as the Canucks beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Wednesday night.
